Healthy Eating - The 4 Food Groups Explained

!±8± Healthy Eating - The 4 Food Groups Explained

When you are considering changing your diet in order to lose weight or simply to improve your health, you should ensure that all 4 food groups are represented in balance. If you can create a diet that includes all of these food groups in the necessary measures, the effects on your health and on your weight will be extremely positive.

1. Proteins provide the body with what it needs to grow healthily. Proteins also govern the metabolism and hormonal functions. The metabolism is a major factor in controlling your weight, the higher metabolism the more calories your body will burn each day. Therefore if you get enough protein, you are likely to have a healthier metabolism and burn more calories each day, requiring less dieting effort to lose weight. You can find proteins in foods like chicken, eggs, fish, and dairy products. The unfortunate side effect of these types of foods is that they tend to have higher levels of fat, you can avoid this by eating protein rich food such as seeds and pulses, which also provide proteins. Eating too much protein can have negative consequences, particularly kidney stones and gout. They key is to eat them in balance with the other food types.

2. Fats and oils are often seen as bad for you, however they are a vital part of your diet. They are called essential fatty acids, and are found in fish, nuts and seeds. They are needed because the body cannot produce them itself, and are an important ingredient in our overall biological system.

3. Fruits and vegetables provide fibre vitamins and minerals and many other vital ingredients. Most people think that only fresh organic vegetables are worth eating, however frozen and root vegetables also supply valuable nutrients. Getting enough fruit and vegetables every day can strengthen your immune system, improve your skins appearance, along with pretty much every aspect of your health.

4. Carbohydrates can be found in both processed and complex forms. Processed carbohydrates should be for the most part avoided, and include foods such as white pasta, cakes, and bread. They have lots of sugars and saturated fats. Complex carbohydrates are contained in foods such as pulses, wheat and couscous. They are vital for giving your body the energy it needs to function. Without carbohydrates, you are likely to feel tired and lethargic.

5. Fibre is the fifth food group that needs to be contained in your balanced diet. Its main purpose is in clearing the bowels and keeping you regular. Without enough fibre, your body will struggle to clear out the poisons and wastes. It is also very effective in preventing several diseases.

By eating the correct balance of foods from these five groups every day, you are giving your body everything it needs to stay healthy.

The Benefits Of Wheat Germ

!±8± The Benefits Of Wheat Germ

I vividly remember as a young kid, my mother would go into the fridge, pull out about 4 oranges, fresh squeeze them into a glass of juice and then add a heaping tablespoon of wheat germ to the mix. At first I just wanted to gag, but over time, I began to actually enjoy this concoction. And, my mother must have known what she was doing, because today she is over 80 and still going strong.

So just what are the benefits of wheat germ? Is there magic to this marvel of nature? Well, it kind of depends on who you ask. The doctors are all convinced that it's more myth than substance and the nutritionists swear by it. The truth is probably somewhere in between, but certainly closer to reality than myth.

The one thing you have to be aware of is that not all wheat germ is the same. For example, wheat germ in its raw form will go bad within just a few days of being exposed to the air. So your best bet is to go with toasted wheat germ, which has a longer shelf life.

As to the benefits, wheat germ, in any form, is a great source of many vitamins, including vitamin E, most of the B vitamin group, folic acid, and a number of minerals such as iron, calcium, zinc. This list is by no means all inclusive. The vitamin E in wheat germ is a powerful antioxidant that is important for fighting cancer and heart problems.

Probably one of the best things about wheat germ, especially as you get older and your digestive system starts to slow down, is that it is an excellent source of fiber. Eating wheat germ on a regular basis, as well as eating other fiber rich foods, is an excellent way to stay regular and avoid things like constipation, or worse, a blocked colon.

Women especially benefit from taking wheat germ as it helps alleviate premenstrual symptoms and also menopausal symptoms. The minerals in wheat germ are also excellent for promoting healthy skin, nails and hair. Women also benefit from having stronger bones and teeth. Also, studies show that eating wheat germ helps prevent certain types of birth defects.

And, if all that isn't enough, a regular diet of wheat germ will also give you more strength and energy, keeps your cholesterol at normal levels and also helps prevent illness.

As I said, the camps are divided as to the benefits of wheat germ. But I keep looking at my 80 plus year old mother and can't help thinking to myself that she must be doing something right.

To YOUR Health,

Steve Wagner

A Few Things About Wheatgrass Juice You Probably Didn't Know

!±8± A Few Things About Wheatgrass Juice You Probably Didn't Know

There are many people who think that wheatgrass juice is simply a health drink that you can take shots of for energy and nutrients. The truth is, there are books filled with long lists of uses and applications. From its health benefits detoxifying from addictions, tooth decay, sore throat, skin problems, constipation, improving blood sugar, high-blood pressure and breathing. There are countless documented uses for this powerful healing juice.

Healing

Some of the early methods of healing with wheatgrass juice were very simple and natural. The instructions would direct a person to lay down a small amount of the pulp from wheatgrass juice and place the wet leafs on the area of the body that was diseased, scarred or irritated. Others uses would include chewing the grass for some time before spitting out the pulp. Today we now know that there is much scientific reason behind this method of healing.

Wheatgrass juice contains the living blood of plants and sprouts; it is full of the energy that all living things thrive on. This plant blood is referred to as chlorophyll, and it has an effect of rebuilding the bloodstream of humans as well as other mammals. There have even been a large number of studies that were conducted on different types of animals, and they all have shown without a doubt that the plant blood chlorophyll is free of any sort of toxic or adverse reactions. However, many people find it has a strange or seemingly foreign taste; after all it is grass juice.

Deodorant Detox

Even with wheatgrass juice having what is a somewhat displeasing taste it does have some other benefits. The living chlorophyll of wheatgrass juice is just like an alovera plant. Its juices have the ability to wash drug deposits from the skin and from the body. This effect even works when wheatgrass is spread over the armpits covering the lymph system. This works as a marvelous deodorant that eliminates body odor.

In The Blood

When you take a shot of wheatgrass juice, you will taste the grass and the sweetness, and very quickly after you will often free changes happening in the body. Typically this is the chlorophyll purifying the liver. When it reaches the blood stream is improves the blood sugar levels. If the juice is gargled or simply held within the mouth, it will eliminate toothaches and over time can help prevent or even strengthen arrested tooth decay. At the same time other people will simply gargle it to remove a sore throat. It would seem that plant blood is good for the skin.

Skin, Hair And Bowels

So much so that there has been a number of guru recommending it for such skin issues such as psoriasis, as well as eczema. Dr. Patricia Linage from the University of Toronto speaks about people who regularly drink the juice and experience the loss of grey hair patches. She also has a number of articles that explain how great wheatgrass juice can be for people who suffer from constipation, and how the body reacts to it by keeping the bowels open due to its high concentration of magnesium. And this is the first thing on a long list of detoxifying effects people experience.

Drug Abuse And Acid Addiction

A new thing that is getting a lot of attention in the community is the phenomenon of people drinking wheatgrass juice and finding it dissolves scarring and damage to the lungs. Especially cigarette smokers and drug users who find that scars can form on the lungs from the various chemicals that people consume today. Many unnatural gasses and substances that are in the air can have an acidic effect of the avioli of the lungs. With wheatgrass juice the carbon monoxide is automatically removed because of the fact that plant blood naturally increases the amount of hemoglobin. This is very much in the same way that high blood pressure can be effectively be reduced by enhancing the capillaries that water, oxygen and minerals are delivered to. This also results in the body eliminating and dissipating all heavy metals from the cells of the body.

There have been many fads over the years as to what vegetables and fruits have detoxification affects on the human body. It has been said that one pound of wheatgrass juice can contain up to twenty-three or more pounds of vegetables like lettuce, celery, carrot, and spinach. Nutritionally, anyone can benefit from eating vegetables for detoxing from addictions, improving blood sugar and high-blood pressure, heal the teeth, skin and organs of the body. So wheatgrass juice is not just for taking shots, but also for rubbing over whatever ales you.

Pre-Packaged Foods Are Not Good For You

!±8± Pre-Packaged Foods Are Not Good For You

If you are serious about getting into shape and eating healthier, you need to open your pantry and throw away all of the pre-packaged foods.

For the most part none of them belong in your diet. Protein bars are good but the Wheat Thins, crackers, chips, low calorie, low carb boxes have to go! If they are in your house you are going to eat them. Don't ruin your diet by keeping them in your pantry. If the bad food isn't there, you can't eat it!

When you open your refrigerator or pantry and there is only healthy options, you can only eat healthy food.

Pre-packaged foods are full of preservatives that are not good for you. When you go to the grocery store you should be shopping in the perimeter of the store.

Most groceries stores have the produce at the beginning of the store. You should be filling up your grocery cart with fresh fruits and vegetables. These are essential for your diet.

Then move on to the meat department and pick up some chicken and turkey. Most everything in your grocery cart should come from one of these two areas in the store.

Don't go down the freezer aisle and throw in Lean Cuisines and Smart Ones in to your cart! These are loaded with sodium and are terrible for you. They may be low in calories but the other ingredients make up for it.

Go to the Ziploc bag section of your store and purchase the new steam bags by Ziploc. These are a life-saver and a time saver.

Throw in your favorite marinade in the bag with a thawed out piece of chicken breast and throw it in the microwave for three minutes. The chicken comes out perfect almost every time. These bags are great for fish, turkey, chicken and fresh vegetables.

They are really convenient and you can make a meal in less than ten minutes with them. These are also great for when you are on vacation or business trip and you are trying to eat healthy.

Most hotels have a microwave and refrigerator in the room, which is perfect to help you eat healthy while on a trip. Just stop in to the store and pick up the bags, vegetables and meat products and bring it with you to the hotel and you are set for a healthy lunch and/or dinner every night.

New "Eating For Your Eye Color" Weight Loss Diet

!±8± New "Eating For Your Eye Color" Weight Loss Diet

Undoubtedly you've heard of the popular book, "The Blood Type Diet". In fact, the 'type' of blood you have is identified by the presence or absence of antigens named A and B. What blood type you are is significant only regarding blood transfusions (and in some cases identifying paternity, since you receive your blood type from your parents). If you receive blood from someone who has an antigen you do not, your body will perceive a foreign invader and an immune response will be triggered. This can be a dangerous reaction. So, blood types are identified in case you need to receive blood one day. Period.

There is absolutely no significance as related to your diet, your food tolerances, allergies, or reactions to food! The fact that someone wrote a book called "Eating for Your Blood Type" is akin to writing a book called, "Eating for your Eye Color". So, I will tell you now how to best eat for your eye color to help you lose weight:

There are groups of people who have blue eyes, others who have brown eyes and some who have green. If both of your parents have blue eyes, so will you--just as if both of your parents have type O blood, you will. Therefore, these characteristics can be seen among others in your family-just go ahead and ask them!

Okay, so first of all, any of you who have blue eyes, listen up! You have light colored eyes and you really like snacks; especially those high in carbohydrates. Am I right? You enjoy having a donut or coffee cake late in the morning. It acts as a real pick-me-up to keep you going until lunch time, and of course, donuts taste so good to you (because your eyes are blue!) You love having some chips or cookies in the afternoon from the vending machine. You just get a craving for something sweet or salty a couple of hours after lunch, and that little munchable treat satisfies you until dinner time. Finally, you often crave something to snack on in the evening while you are watching television. How do I know this? Your eyes are blue! Mine are too. I like to snack.

How can we lose weight? Here's how: find a lower calorie substitute for the snacks you are presently consuming. There are fantastic 100 calorie snack bags so you can have a hostess mini-cake package late morning, some wheat thins or cheese nips in the afternoon, and a skinny cow ice cream bar in the evening. Yes, even though you have blue eyes and you like to snack, you can still lose weight --just get your snacking under control.

Now for those of you with brown eyes: you like sweets, especially chocolate. And you like peanut butter. Of course you do; I know that because your eyes are brown. I have friends with brown eyes-they like chocolate and peanut butter. So, you like to eat peanut M & M's, snickers candy bars, chocolate ice cream with nuts in it, and other treats that have a lot of calories. This makes you gain weight. You gain weight when you eat chocolate and peanut butter because your eyes are brown! And because these are very high calorie foods. What can you do about it?

First of all, realize that liking chocolate or peanut butter is not really a physiological craving. You do not need chocolate. You just like it because it tastes good. So you need to know that if you can wait until the craving passes and not wolf down a king-sized Snickers bar or double Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, you will be okay. For every 300 calories you can pass up (check the labels on those candy bars), you'll lose three more pounds by the end of the month. This could be nine pounds a month if you're indulging three times a day!

If you still want the taste (of course you do!) then learn to control the portions. Again, many of the 100 calorie snack bags are foods you would enjoy; chocolate covered pretzels, nutter-butter cookie crisps, and chocolate chip cookies. There are lower calorie brands of ice cream and you need to measure out a ½ cup portion when you eat it, instead of scooping ice cream into the bowl until it's full (yes, I know that's what you do, because your eyes are brown).

And, finally, we get to the smaller percentage of the population-those with pretty, green eyes. Unfortunately, you are predisposed to a taste for foods that have fat in them! This is unfortunate because fats have twice the calories of carbohydrates. You like donuts, potato chips, cakes, and pie. Cookies, brownies, and ice cream are also sources of fat, as well as sour cream, butter, and salad dressing. You have green eyes, so I know you are not someone who likes a dry baked potato or an undressed salad. You usually order French fries or a milkshake when you go out for fast food.

What can you do to get that weight off? Start limiting your portions of these foods. Write down everything you eat for a week. See how many times each day, on average, you indulge in one of these high fat foods. Now make the decision to reduce this to only one time a day, at most. If you have a donut, you do not also get a milkshake later that day; if you get fried fish you do not also have French fries; if you have pie after lunch you do not also get ice cream after dinner. You have green eyes: you need to find other ways to treat yourself during the day besides eating these high-fat foods!

To everyone with colored eyes, best of luck with your weight loss efforts! I'm confident you will be able to lose weight after you choose lower calorie snacks, reduce your portion sizes, decrease the calories consumed from treats, and find other ways to de-stress besides eating high-calorie foods.

I must add here, that this is a spoof, just in case someone believes these tips are scientifically related to the color of your eyes. The good news is these tips actually will work for you no matter what your eye color!

Eggs-Eat Your Yolks!

!±8± Eggs-Eat Your Yolks!

Eggs are one of God's most perfect foods. People need to eat more eggs. Eggs are protein-rich, low in sodium, and contain vitamins and minerals. In addition, eggs are inexpensive, delicious, and easy to prepare. Studies have now shown that many people on a low-fat diet can eat one or two eggs a day without measurable changes in their blood cholesterol levels. Saturated fat in the diet, not dietary cholesterol, is what influences blood cholesterol levels the most.

I often find that my clients need more eggs as an excellent source of choline, zinc, selenium, copper, iron, magnesium and sulfur. Eggs are also a good source of easy-to-digest protein, iodine, Vitamin B2, molybdenum, phosphorous, Vitamin B5, Vitamin D and Vitamin K.

Eggs Benefit diseases such as: Adrenal exhaustion, Anemia, Blood clots, Brain and nervous system disorders (like Dementia, MS, Parkinson's, and ALS), Breast cancer, Cardiovascular disease, Digestive disorders, Gallbladder trouble, Macular degeneration, Memory challenges, Osteoporosis, Poor hair/coat, and Skin disorders. (Note: Please don't give more than 1-2 raw eggs/week to your pets as raw eggs can affect protein binding.)

But aren't eggs high in cholesterol? Cholesterol is not a fat. It is a waxy, fat-like substance produced by all animals, including humans. Cholesterol is needed for many bodily functions and serves to insulate nerve fibers, maintain cell walls and produce vitamin D, various hormones and digestive juices. Cholesterol is produced by the liver.

There is a difference between dietary cholesterol (the cholesterol you consume in foods like eggs) and blood cholesterol (the cholesterol in your bloodstream, also called serum cholesterol.)

Dietary cholesterol is present in varying amounts in some foods, such as meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, and dairy products. Dietary cholesterol does not automatically become blood cholesterol when you eat it. Most blood cholesterol is made by your body and varies from body to body.

People get increased blood cholesterol because they are not taking care of their livers. They don't eat their fruits and vegetables, their gall bladders are backed up, they harbor anger and resentment, and irritate their liver with alcohol, food additives, trans-fats, sugar, and white flour which overwork the liver preventing it from keeping up with detoxification.

Egg Yolk Facts:

oThe yolk or yellow portion makes up about 33% of the liquid weight of the egg.

oThe yolk contains all of the fat in the egg and a little less than half of the protein.

oWith the exception of riboflavin and niacin, the yolk contains a higher proportion of the egg's vitamins than the white.

oAll of the egg's vitamins A, D and E are in the yolk.

oEgg yolks are one of the few foods naturally containing vitamin D.

oThe yolk also contains more phosphorus, manganese, iron, iodine, copper, and calcium than the white, and it contains all of the zinc.

Yolk color depends on the diet of the hen. Natural yellow-orange substances such as marigold petals may be added to light-colored feeds to enhance colors. Artificial color additives are not permitted. Hens fed mashes containing yellow corn and alfalfa meal lay eggs with medium yellow yolks, while those eating wheat or barley yield lighter-colored yolks. A colorless diet, such as white cornmeal produces almost colorless yolks. Natural yellow-orange substances such as marigold petals may be added to light-colored feeds to enhance yolk color. Yolk pigments are relatively stable and are not lost or changed in cooking.

Why are home-grown eggs sometimes unwashed? Well, washing removes an egg's natural antibacterial defense layer. Producers wash eggs with a machine and then dip the eggs in an oil solution to restore this layer. They also have automatic candling systems to check for blood spots and double yolks. These eggs are then filtered out of the process and put into pre-cracked egg mixtures and sold by the 5-gallon bucket.

Types of Eggs:

Omega Eggs are high in beneficial omega 3 fatty acids and contain less saturated fat than conventional eggs. These eggs are produced by hens fed a patented diet that includes flax seed, algae, vegetables high in omega 3 fats, insects, lots of fresh green grass, fresh and dried fruit, and small amounts of corn. They contain 350 milligrams of omega 3 fatty acids compared with 60 milligrams in regular eggs. They are also slightly lower in cholesterol (by 35mg.) Omega 3 fatty acids increase the ratio of good (HDL) to bad (LDL) cholesterol in blood and decrease occurrence of blood clots and arrhythmias, research indicates. Omega-3 fatty acids are an essential component of the human diet and are needed for brain growth and development. They may be helpful in the prevention and treatment of heart disease, high blood pressure, inflammation, mental health disorders, diabetes, digestive disorders and autoimmune diseases.

"Two Omega Eggs provide the same amount of Omega 3 fatty acids as a 3-ounce serving of salmon," says the developer of the diet, Sheila Scheideler.

Vitamin-Enhanced Eggs- These eggs contain slightly higher amounts of Vitamin E, folate, lutein, Vitamin B-6, and Vitamin B-12, which are added to their growing diet.

Free-range eggs are those from hens who have access to nesting boxes, open floor space, perches and outdoor runs. The eggs from free-range hens contain significantly more folic acid and vitamin B12 and they may have a healthier omega fatty acid ratio than supermarket eggs.

Free run eggs are from hens allowed to roam freely in an enclosed facility. Producers undergo more work because egg safety and quality is more challenging to manage since eggs can come in contact with droppings, dirt, and can be laid in many places making quick egg collection a challenge.

At least there is room to move and the chickens haven't worn all the feathers off their necks because the cages are too small for all of them to sleep at once. Chickens in these types of pens have to stick their heads out for more room. I saw this during my chicken block in vet school. It made me sick. Low Cholesterol Eggs are achieved by feeding an all-vegetable diet with canola oil as the fat source. A 50% reduction of cholesterol was reported by one company's ad.

The Low-Down on Salmonella:

With clean, uncracked, fresh eggshells, internal contamination causing Salmonella rarely occurs. It has been estimated that one of every 20,000 eggs might contain the Salmonella bacteria. At this rate, if you're an average consumer, you might encounter a contaminated egg once every 84 years. That's not bad. In addition, if you handle the eggs properly, and rotate the eggs so they are always fresh, your chances of getting Salmonella from an egg is even slimmer.

And the Salmonella bacteria would most likely to be in the white. Here, it is unable to grow due to lack of nutrients. As the egg ages, however, the white thins and the yolk membrane weakens. This makes it possible for bacteria to reach the nutrient-dense yolk where they can grow, especially if the egg is kept at warm temperatures. Cooking kills Salmonella.

Salmonellosis is most often associated with animal foods, including chicken, eggs, pork and cheese, but has also been reported in cantaloupe, tomatoes, alfalfa sprouts, orange juice and cereal. Human carriers play a big role in transmitting some types of Salmonellosis, so Salmonella bacteria can easily spread from one food to another.

What are the symptoms of Salmonellosis? Signs of Salmonellosis include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, chills, fever and/or headache within 6 to 72 hours after eating. The symptoms usually last only a day or two in healthy people but can lead to serious complications for young children, pregnant women, elderly people and the ill whose immune systems are very weak.

Anyone who has had Salmonellosis may pass along the bacteria through the feces, sometimes up to one year in atypical cases, but usually for at least several weeks after recovering. Salmonellosis is seldom fatal, and we have a couple of awesome homeopathic remedies to combat that disease. Nutritional Value of Eggs:

Whole eggs offer almost every essential vitamin and mineral needed by humans, with the exception of vitamin C. A large egg has 215 mg of cholesterol, but only contains 4.5 grams of total fat, 1.5 grams of saturated fat, 75 calories--59 of which are in the yolk. That's good news for all you people who have multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's and dementia who should be on an extremely effective, low-fat diet like the Swank diet. The egg yolk contains 45% of the egg's protein, numerous minerals, and the majority of the egg's vitamins.

Eggs have a full complement of nicely balanced amino acids which we use in every cell of our body. Eggs contain lecithin, choline, Vitamin A to supports the immune system and skin, Vitamin D and polyunsaturated oils which help utilize calcium and helps to draw it into the bones, Vitamin E which acts as an antioxidant, Vitamin B12 that helps build healthy blood cells, Folic acid to support the nervous system, inosital for brain sugar, niacin and other B Vitamins to thin the blood and support adrenal function. Most of us could use that extra adrenal support!

Egg Allergies: Although most outgrow it, a common cause of food allergy in infants and young children is the egg. Food allergies are abnormal responses of the body's immune system to certain foods or ingredients. Food allergies can show up as: acne, anaphylactic shock, asthma, bed-wetting, bladder infections, bursitis, chronic gastrointestinal disturbances, depression, diarrhea, ear infections, eczema, fatigue, headache, hives, hyperactivity, insomnia, joint pain, migraine, nasal congestion, nausea, rashes, sinusitis, and skin rash. People with food allergies usually need to eliminate the problem foods from their diet.

Why Eat Organic? Organically raised, free-range animal products contain less antibiotic and hormone residue and have a higher omega-3 and Vitamin E content. The eggs are laid by happy birds. That means more love goes into the egg, giving it superior nutritional value and a high vibration which makes your body happier. They also taste better.

Kids School Lunches - 13 Alternatives to Promote Health and Nutrition and Avoid Fast Food

!±8± Kids School Lunches - 13 Alternatives to Promote Health and Nutrition and Avoid Fast Food

For parents, providing your kids with healthy, nutritional lunches that they find interesting can be quite a challenge. The "if it is good for you then it must be boring" mentality makes this particularly challenging and you have such favorites as lollies, sweets and fizzy drinks to compete with.

Don't despair, it can be done and here are 13 alternatives to get you started. Instead of...

1. High fat savoury biscuits -- why not try

* Plain dry crackers, rice cakes, corn thins or Scottish oatcakes.

* Raw carrots or celery cut into small pieces are also an excellent choice.

2. Pies, pastry or sausage rolls -- why not try

* Meat or cheese sandwiches or pasta with mince beef sauces (you can buy wheat/gluten free bread and pasta if required).

* Tuna and sweetcorn.

* Brown rice (or white) with tuna and roasted vegetables.

* Falafel (Lebanese delicacy made from chick peas).

3. Processed meats such as frankfurters, salami or other -- why not try

* Mince burger (home made), lentil burgers or bean burgers.

* Leftovers from main meals.

* Quality ham (e.g. Virginia) or cooked bacon, which has been grilled, and the fat/rind removed.

* Quality sausages that are mostly meat and not too fatty (gluten free sausages are a great alternative if you can find them).

4. Biscuits (cream filled or chocolate) -- why not try

* Crackers or plain sweet biscuits, oatcakes, rice crackers or rice cakes.

You can make these interesting by having different topics like tuna and sweet corn or avocado (too much avocado may be regarded as fattening).

5. Chocolate / candy bars - why not try

* Cheese cubes or dried fruit or yoghurt with fresh fruit to add to it.

* Dairy products may make you feel bloated, so sheep's or goat's yogurt make a great alternative to cows yoghurt and have a different texture and taste. They are less bulky and easier to digest).

6. Muesli bars and breakfast bars (these are often full of sugar and preservatives) -- why not try

* Fresh fruit such as grapes, melon cubes, oranges or mandarins/satsumas.

* Nut muesli bars (check the ingredients first though).

7. Cordial or fizzy drinks -- why not try

* Water is the best option to add to any lunch box.

* Dairy, soy or rice milk are also good alternatives.

8. Chocolate spreads -- why not try

* Sesame seed spread (tahini).

* Humous.

* Dip such as yoghurt, avocado or one that you make yourself, dipping for example, pitta bread or cut up vegetables.

9. Lollies / sweets -- why not try

* Dried fruit, nuts and raisins.
